Courageous Advocacy & Koinonia

At Aughton St Michael's, we believe that every child is called to make a positive difference in the world. Inspired by the Christian principle of Koinonia, meaning fellowship, community and shared responsibility, we encourage our children to recognise that they are part of something bigger than themselves and that they have a role to play in serving others.

Our School Council plays a central role in leading this work, empowering pupils to identify causes they are passionate about, raise awareness of local and global issues, and organise whole-school initiatives that inspire positive change. Through charity fundraising, community projects and pupil-led campaigns, children learn that their voices matter and that collective action can make a meaningful difference.

Linked closely to our vision of Encourage, Guide, Support, Celebrate, we strive to develop courageous advocates who show compassion, challenge injustice and take action to support those in need. Through these experiences, our children grow as responsible citizens who live out their values, demonstrate empathy and actively contribute to the flourishing of their communities and the wider world.

"Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
1 John 3:18

Skelmersdale Foodbank

As part of our commitment to Koinonia and courageous advocacy, our School Council led a whole-school initiative to support Skelmersdale Food Bank. Children explored the importance of serving others and considered how communities can work together to support those experiencing hardship. Through a collection of food and essential household items, pupils encouraged the school community to take action and demonstrate compassion in practical ways. This initiative helped children understand that small acts of kindness, when combined, can make a significant difference to the lives of others.

Whitechapel Charity

Our support for the Whitechapel Centre was led by our School Council, who wanted to make a meaningful difference to people experiencing homelessness and hardship. After learning about the charity's work and the challenges faced by vulnerable members of society, the children took ownership of planning fundraising activities for our Summer Fete. Their creative ideas included popular events such as "Beat the Keeper" and "Soak Mr Clare," which brought the whole school community together in support of an important cause.

The initiative raised an incredible £777.05 for the Whitechapel Centre and demonstrated the impact that children can have when they work together towards a shared goal. Through this pupil-led project, children experienced first-hand how their ideas, leadership and actions can create positive change. The experience deepened their understanding of compassion, service and social justice, while reinforcing our commitment to Koinonia and courageous advocacy. By using their voices and talents to support others, our children showed what it means to live out our Christian vision and make a difference in the wider world.
